A desktop processor and graphics card in a laptop? A laptop capable of playing games at frame rates and with processing performance once only reserved for monstrous towers? Hell, yeah!
I was able to source a ‘barebones’ Clevo P775DM1-G , which is basically just the laptop case, screen, keyboard and graphics card. However, by the time all of the other components had been costed, I found that UK-based PC Specialist are incredibly competitive on price. Also, buying just the base unit from a third party would have left me with very little cover in terms of warranties.

The machine arrived a couple of weeks after the order was placed. The standard delivery was with DPD who are excellent, a one-hour delivery slot was sent via text on the morning of delivery and it arrived well within the allocated time. There are probably plenty of unboxing videos on YouTube, so we will skip all of that!
On first impressions, it does not look much and surprisingly, it is actually not a great deal bigger than my aging Dell 17R 7720 SE.
The BIOS is shockingly sparse and who the…. are Style Note? It looks like this one came without any PC Specialist branding!
As I had ordered it without the operating system, PC Specialist do install a test version of Windows 10 Home. So once you have it plugged in it is ready to have a quick play around with if you so wish. After a few quick checks, the Samsung 950 Pro was reformatted and Windows 10 Pro was incredibly quickly installed.
25/04/2016 – A quick update.
I had noticed some backlight bleed when on a dark screen, this became more evident whilst performing a dead pixel test using the following http://jasonfarrell.com/misc/deadpixeltest.php.
When viewing the true black screen, the glow from the bottom left-hand becomes incredibly noticeable.
I have contacted PCS and their engineer agrees that this backlight bleed is excessive. Unfortunately, there appears to be a bit of an issue when it comes to screen replacements for the P775DM1-G, as you can read here:- https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/9208-p775dm1-g-g-sync-lost-after-screen-repair/
So I am just waiting to hear back from PCS to find out if this screen mix-up can be avoided before I send it back under an RMA or have the machine replaced. (Screen = 17.3″ LG LP173WF4-SPF1 FHD IPS Matte 1920 x 1080)
30/04/2016 – Further update.
Now PCS has my money they really don’t seem to give a flying eff, the best that I have got from them so far is ‘Return it for RMA and we will get it back to you as soon as possible’. They have not given me any assurance they have the correct screen in stock and have so far not acknowledged that there is an issue with correct screen identification on this model. I am getting slightly annoyed.
06/05/2016 – Further update.
Following a bit of a rant, PCS have now given me assurance that they have the correct replacement screen in stock, it has been tested and it is being reserved to go in this laptop. The laptop is now on it’s way back to them.
11/05/2016 – Further update.
PC Specialist do not seem to understand the meaning of priority. Having been promised my RMA would be treated as a priority, the fact they received it back at lunchtime on Monday and here we are Wednesday evening and it has not even been looked at yet is beginning to make me think they are just a complete shower of you-know-what.
14/05/2016 – It’s back – eventually.
I sent a fairly strongly worded message on Wednesday and got a phone call from a supervisor that evening. I was promised my RMA was top of the pile for a technician to fix the following morning, all going well it would be tested and dispatched the same day for delivery on Friday. I received a message on Thursday afternoon to say that the screen had been replaced, testing had been done and it was ready for collection by courier. I was not a happy bunny when I got a phone call at 18:46 Thursday evening to say it had not been sent. It’s just a good job PCS did see fit to get it dispatched on Friday for a Saturday morning delivery. It turned up before 12:00!
The new screen is still not perfect but on first inspection it does appear to have significantly less backlight bleed than the one it replaced. Just waiting for it to get dark so I can take a direct comparison photograph.
The BIOS has also been refreshed to display a PC Specialist boot logo instead of that disappointing Style Note one. PC Specialist have also agreed to refresh my warranty start date to coincide with receipt of the laptop back from this RMA.
Well, that is disappointing. With the settings exactly the same as in the previous picture one could almost be mistaken for thinking this is the same screen! *Bangs head in disbelief*

And as you can probably imagine, at 100% brightness the screen is absolutely disgusting. Well done PC Specialist.
To cut a long story short, after a lot more issues the laptop finally went back for a refund.
