Available from a company called Dataram; who specialise in computer memory - is a small utility called RAMDisk 3.5.
The free version will work for anyone with up to 6GB of installed RAM. However if you have more RAM, the license to use the full version only costs $9.99 (about £6.70).
The 4GB limit is for the size of the disk you create with RAMDisk. If you have 6GB of RAM installed then you will not want to dedicate any more than 4GB to RAMDisk. So you can use the free version.
RAMDisk is simple to use. Download the small installer in seconds and once you have closed everything else down (browsers, other programs etc.) double click on the Dataram_RAMDisk_V3.5.130RC13a file to start the installation.
The configuration utility will be displayed once the program has installed. This is where you set you disk size and type.
For a simple calculation multiply the amount of RAM in your PC by 1024.
Deduct 2048 from the figure and you are left with the amount of spare ram you could dedicate to RAMDisk in MB
So if you have 4GB of installed RAM you can try giving 2GB to RAMDisk or 2048MB.
In the photo I have 4096MB (4GB) to dedicate to RAMDisk. I will change the unformatted option to FAT32. When you click on the start button your disk loads to RAM and you should see a pop-up indicating that Windows has just detected a new disk. You now have a small SSD.
I am experimenting with using RAMDisk as a dedicated device for the ReadyBoost feature in Vista and Windows 7, so far so good but please don’t try this at home – well not on my say so, do so at your own peril!
